Sean M. Mitchell, Ph.D.
Laboratory Director

I am a clinical psychologist and Associate Professor in the Department of Psychological Sciences at Texas Tech University. I also hold a clinical faculty appointment at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center.

My research focuses on suicide prevention and understanding suicide risk across healthcare and community settings. The Suicide Risk and Prevention Research (SRPR) Laboratory conducts translational research aimed at improving how suicide risk is identified, understood, and addressed in real-world contexts.

Our work integrates:

  • Clinical science

  • Ecological momentary assessment (EMA)

  • Psychometrics

  • Implementation science

  • Community-engaged research

Current projects examine:

  • Real-time suicide risk processes

  • Suicide risk disclosure

  • Interpersonal and cognitive risk factors

  • Suicide prevention implementation

  • Scalable community and healthcare interventions

The SRPR Laboratory collaborates with healthcare systems, community organizations, law enforcement agencies, and interdisciplinary research teams to advance clinically actionable and evidence-informed suicide prevention efforts.

Our work has been supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP), the Texas Child Mental Health Care Consortium, and other federal, foundation, and community-based funding initiatives.
