Sean M. Mitchell, Ph.D.
Laboratory Director
I am a clinical psychologist and Associate Professor in the Department of Psychological Sciences at Texas Tech University, with an additional clinical faculty appointment at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center.
My research focuses on suicide prevention and understanding suicide risk across healthcare and community settings. Through the Suicide Risk and Prevention Research (SRPR) Laboratory, I conduct translational research aimed at improving how suicide risk is identified, understood, and addressed in real-world contexts.
Our research has been supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP), the Texas Child Mental Health Care Consortium, and other federal, foundation, and statewide initiatives.
Mentorship Philosophy
I strongly value collaborative, mentorship-focused training in clinical science and suicide prevention research. Students in the SRPR Laboratory are encouraged to develop their own research interests while receiving close mentorship in research design, scientific writing, statistical methods, professional development, and dissemination. I strive to create a supportive, collaborative, and growth-oriented training environment that prepares students for careers in clinical psychology, academia, healthcare, and translational research.
Training Environment
The SRPR Laboratory provides opportunities for students to engage in both foundational and applied suicide prevention research. Students are also encouraged to pursue professional development opportunities.
Prospective Students
Prospective graduate students interested in clinical psychology, suicide prevention research, translational clinical science, or related areas are encouraged to review the laboratory’s research initiatives and publications to determine fit with the SRPR Laboratory.
Competitive applicants typically demonstrate:
-
Strong research interests aligned with the laboratory
-
Motivation for collaborative scientific work
-
Intellectual curiosity
-
Interest in mentorship and professional development.
Prospective students are welcome to contact Dr. Mitchell with questions regarding research interests, mentorship, or the graduate application process.
