What?
Stress Control is a community-based program that teaches different ways to decrease symptoms of stress (like worry, sadness, thoughts of suicide) and increase wellbeing. There are 6 classes in total, and we meet once per week, for 6 weeks. Classes are 1 hour and 30 minutes with a short break. Classes are designed to be non-interactive. This means you will not be asked to talk in front of a group or share personal information during the classes.
Why?
We are interested in whether going to the Stress Control program helps people feel better, improve their wellbeing, and have fewer thoughts of suicide.
Who?
-
Adults aged 18 and older
-
Able to attend in-person classes in Lubbock
-
Can communicate in English
-
Have thoughts of suicide in the past month
* This program is open to the public, so adults without thoughts of suicide can still attend the Stress Control program. Study participants are also welcome to bring friends or family with them. People who are not enrolled in the study and who do not complete the surveys or focus group, like the public, friends, or family, will not be paid for attending.
What's involved?
First, we would ask you to complete a 5-minute screening form to see if you are eligible to participate in the study.
If you are eligible and still want to participate in the study, you would then read and sign a consent form for being in the study. Next, you would fill in a brief demographics survey that asks you questions about yourself, like your age and background.
We would then ask you to view the list of study dates. You would be asked to select the dates when you are available to participate in the study.
Then, you would be randomly selected to be in 1 of 2 groups for the study. You could be asked to either:
-
Attend the Stress Control program. This would involve going to 6 classes (1 class per week for 6 weeks). Before each class, you would take a brief, 5-minute survey. You may also be given the opportunity to participate in a 1-hour focus group at the end of the program.
OR
-
Complete 6 brief, 5-minute weekly surveys, and then have the option to attend the Stress Control program after that 6-week period. This means you would take a 5-minute survey once per week for 6 weeks. After 6 weeks, you would have the option to attend the 6 Stress Control classes.
Then, 3 days before starting in either of the above groups, we would send you an email with a link to a 30- to 40-minute survey. After completing the survey, you will receive up to $15.
If you are not able to complete the 30- to 40-minute survey before your selected start date, you will not be included in the study. This means we will not be able to pay you the $15 for the survey. If you are still interested in participating, we would ask you to select another study date.
After the 6-week study is over, we will send you another email with a link to a second 30- to 40-minute survey. After completing the survey within 7 days of receiving it, you will receive up to $15.
If you complete both 30- to 40-minute surveys, you will receive $30. If you do not have access to the Internet or email, we will contact you before and after the study to complete each of the surveys.
When?
Evening classes: Mondays & Tuesdays
Morning classes: Tuesdays & Wednesdays
